When trying to rename a domain controller to a name of an old domain control you receive the error below:
Duplicate (potentially the shorter NETBIOS) name exists on the network.you should choose a different name…”
To fix the Issue open command prompt and type:
Rename the old DC (If you demoted and removed it from the domain and it’s still on the network you have to rename it)
Run
nbtstat –rr
