How to Create a Mount Point On Windows Server 2016

In this blog post, I’ll show you how to create a storage Mount Point on Windows Server 2016.

Windows Server 2016 makes NTFS Mount Points the perfect solution for applications that use multiple storage volumes or just in case you want to use a cleaner storage solution.

About Mount Point

NTFS mount points provide an entry point to other volumes without using a specific drive letter.

We create them in a directory on an NTFS file system, which gives a reference to the root directory of the mounted volume.

Scenario

In my scenario, I need to create mount points to Exchange Server 2016 databases.

I also have 2 Virtual Disks with 1TB of storage on each which I’ll use in the mount points.

Get Started

To get started, I’ll create a new Folder on my root D drive which will be the Directory the mount point will reside, later on, I’ll create a storage volume and mount it inside the folder.

Next, I’ll create the folder structure under the root directory

Provision Disks and Volumes

This step is very important because this where we create the volumes and use them as mount points.

Below, I’ll Initialize the disks by right click on them and select Initialize Disk

Select GPT not MBR for large disks

Create Volume

Now, I’ll create a volume by right click on the volume and select New Simple Volume

Click next

Select the size

Here I’ll select the second option and use the folder I created in step 1

Now I’ll format the drive

And as you can see below, the mount point is available under the Exchange -> Database folder

Conclusion

Mount Points are a great option in case you don’t want to deal with drive letters and want to create a cleaner solution which can easily scale up.

Windows Server 2016 allows us to create mounts points for large drives and also make the process very easy to follow and use.
